Our Approach

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals accept their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. ACT encourages people to commit to actions that align with their values and improve their lives. It combines mindfulness practices with behavioral changes, empowering individuals to live in the present moment and handle life's challenges with more resilience and flexibility. By fostering acceptance and commitment, ACT helps individuals reduce suffering and build a meaningful, fulfilling life.

Financial Therapy

Financial Therapy is an innovative approach that blends financial planning with emotional and psychological support. It addresses the complex relationship between a person's financial behaviors and their mental well-being. Financial therapists help clients understand and alter unhealthy money habits, improve financial decision-making, and manage stress related to finances. By integrating financial expertise with therapeutic techniques, financial therapy aims to create holistic financial health, ensuring that clients not only achieve their monetary goals but also experience greater peace of mind and emotional stability.

Benefits of Blending ACT and Financial Therapy

Combining Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with financial therapy offers a powerful and comprehensive approach to financial well-being. This integration helps clients address both the emotional and practical aspects of their financial lives. ACT's emphasis on mindfulness and value-driven action complements financial therapy's focus on behavioral change and financial literacy. Together, they provide clients with tools to accept financial stressors, commit to healthier financial habits, and align their financial actions with their personal values. This holistic approach promotes lasting financial health, emotional resilience, and a balanced, fulfilling life.

Enrique and Sarit, Los Angeles

Enrique and Sarit have been married for 26 years. They are retired and enjoy each other immensely. However, they reached out as money conversations are challenging, and wanted to heal this part of their relationship. Through financial therapy, they listened to each other’s money stories and limiting messages that led to their conflict. Enrique experienced periods of financial trauma in his previous marriage and was constantly chasing debt. Additionally, they live in Los Angeles and Enrique fears the cost of living adjustments in their retirement. As a result, he has a hard time spending money. Sarit wishes to enjoy their retirement and savings but is hesitant to verbalize “wanting” things. Through ACT, they were able to accept these opposing views, learn to respond differently in financial situations, start spending dates, and take actions to focus on their overall lifestyle goals. They reported increased quality of life, positive communication, and relationship satisfaction.

Ben, San Francisco

Ben presented after being referred by his tax attorney in San Francisco for chronic underpayment of taxes. Ben reports he had engaged in a cycle of increasing avoidance over the last decade that resulted in extreme anxiety and avoidance of his finances. Through financial therapy, he identified limiting money beliefs about the amount he had to pay as a high-income earner. Through ACT, he learned to accept these challenging thoughts, learned skills to reduce his anxiety, identified and focused on his core values, and started taking action toward being in control of his finances.
